Baby Nine
Patch Quilt
This quilt is beginner friendly and can be sewn up in a weekend.
I was able to sew the top in a couple hours. The quilting can be just as quick with an all over meander.
Yardage Needed:
Various Prints: 96 2 ½ inch squares - a little less than ½ a yard.
Light Print: One 2 ½ strip.
White: ½ yard.
Yellow: ¾ yards for the outer border and binding.
Cutting Instructions:
Various Prints: If cutting from strips, cut enough for ninety-six 2 ½ inch squares
Light Print:
Cut twelve 2 ½ squares
White:
Cut six strips 2 ½ x WOF
Using five of the strips, cut the following from each strip:
One 26 ½ x 2 ½ rectangle and two 6 ½ x 2 ½ rectangles.
From the last strip, cut out the six remaining 6 ½ x 2 ½ rectangles.
There will be a total of five white 26 ½ x 2 ½ rectangles and sixteen white 6 ½ x 2 ½ rectangles.
Yellow:
Cut four 4 ½ inch strips x WOF
Subcut into four 34 ½ x 4 ½ inch rectangles
Cut four 2 ¼ inch strips x WOF for binding.
Make 12 Nine Patches:
Place a light print 2 ½ square and surround it with 8 random various prints.
Sew the squares together creating a top, middle, and bottom row.
Sew the top and bottom rows to the middle row.
Create Rows:
The quilt is made of four rows with sashing. A sashing strip is sewn at the beginning and end of each row. This creates the inner white border.
Layout the nine patch blocks for each row.
Start with a white 6 ½ x 2 ½ inch rectangle and sew each row by alternating sashing and nine patch blocks till you get three blocks in the row and end with a sashing rectangle.
Make four rows.
Sewing Rows together:
Sew a 26 ½ x 2 ½ sashing strip to the bottom of each row.
Sew each row together.
Add the final 26 ½ x 2 ½ rectangle on the top.
Add Borders:
Using the yellow 34 ½ x 4 ½ inch rectangles, sew on a pair of side borders first.
Then add a pair of top borders.
Stand back and admire.
Quilt and Bind:
If you are short on time, you can quilt the top using a quick all over meander.
If you have a little more time, this top is the perfect size to practice some custom free motion quilting.
Binding: After quilting, use the remaining 2 ½ yellow strips for the binding.
